ALUMNI TESTIMONIALS
Muhamed Bayo, 2020 Graduate of Careers in Sports High School, - “My STEER experience is nothing short of fantastic. The STEER network had me and other students interest in the forefront of their organization, this could be felt from how willing and consistent they were in providing help. I’ve always thought an underrated part of STEER is Dr. Morales and the valuable lessons he provided. I am beyond grateful.”
Nicole Barros, 2018 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “STEER has helped me in my academics and sports career in high school. I was grateful to have been initiated in this program, knowing it was only a select few. I was able to receive the proper help in my academics by providing tutors and preps for certain exams. In my sports career, they were able to provide training. I have learned to help others that were once in my shoes at any time because of STEER. I love giving back and cannot wait to give back to future STEER students.”
Jada Smith, 2020 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “The best part of my STEER experience was getting to meet a bunch of new people and being able to experience many things.”
Rayder Sanchez, 2016 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “The STEER program provided me with many valuable resources that helped me get into and successfully graduate from college. They paid for well-needed SAT prep classes and provided countless seminars around leadership, time management, and how to stay motivated. All these skills helped me become a better overall student and a better athlete on the field. Having STEER in my corner gave me the support I needed to become a first-generation college graduate.”
Chasity Ceballos, 2019 Graduate of Careers in Sports High School, - “I always say STEER will always be my second family. We all love and look out for one another no matter what. The endless support and meaningful bonds and relationships are unmatched and ones I hope to keep for a long time.”
Nani Velasquez, 2019 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “Big support system, mentors help with what they can, do everything they can to get you to next level education, even if you don't plan on playing sports.”
Tyla Dupree, 2019 Graduate of Careers in Sports High School, - “STEER has been super beneficial to my student athletics in High School and really encouraged me to run in college. I know I can text Steer Staff and get a response if I need any advice or help.”
Anessa Brito, 2019 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “My junior year I did summer criminal justice at Syracuse University which helped me decide on my major and has looked good on my resume. Also, I did a Nike soccer camp, which got me ready for my senior year season. Was the best experience ever. I also did Bruce Beck Summer camp which opened my eyes that I did not want to be a communication major. But the experience was great and getting to do many new things was an amazing experience.”
Joseph Tapia, 2020 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “STEER gave me the resources I needed ranging from mental classes to SAT prep to essentials values that I will carry onto college and the rest of my life. I was provided with mentors who, beyond STEER, nurture me to be the best person I can be. My success, in part, is due to the incredible staff at STEER, from the board members, mentors, and fellow peers. I loved my time during STEER and would recommend any student to get involved if they can.”
Emmanuel Owusu, 2020 Graduate of Palisade Preparatory High School, - “The best part of STEER was the people around always checking up on you, making sure you do your schoolwork & if you need anything they’re going to help you with your problem.”
Eliezer Johnson, 2020 Graduate of Palisade Preparatory High School, - “Before I went to STEER I was fairly new to everything. My main goal at the time was just to attend college by any means. When I figured out Palisade Prep had a football team I decided to join and see what I could do since I played a lot of backyard football. My coach at the time, Michael Devlin, asked me if I wanted to join STEER at the time and to be honest, I was very hesitant because at the time I thought it would be something I wouldn’t need. However, my dad said that I should take an interview for them and give it a shot. Me taking that chance became one of the best decisions of my life. Not only I became All-League my junior year of football, All-Conference my senior year, and Player of the Year for my team, but most importantly I achieved my personal goal of going to college. STEER has given me the motivation to push for what I want to do in life which I found the most grateful about being in the program. So to any future STEER members who are going to the program, just know that you are in good hands.”
Karmen Pantoja, 2017 Graduate of Port Chester High School, - “STEER was a pivotal organization in my growth through high school and into college. Navigating high school can be a daunting experience, but STEER helped me ensure I stayed in line with my hopes and goals. Prior to STEER, I had a minimal understanding of what I needed to accomplish my goals. Through the mentorship, guidance, community, and support I received from STEER, I was able to excel in high school and create a strong foundation for my university years. As a first-generation college student, there is a lot I did not know. The college process became a lot easier through the assistance and support STEER provided. The STEER community, alongside my mentor, not only allowed me to realize that I can achieve anything I wanted to, they helped me get to a position where I could achieve anything I wanted. Overall, STEER helped me see the potential in myself and helped me create a strong foundation for my college years and beyond.”
McKenzie Lovell, 2019 Graduate of Palisade Preparatory High School, - “Steer has allowed me to learn more about the college experience and plan my steps to being successful in the future. I was able to hear from many different people with amazing jobs and careers and get insight on what certain jobs and schools look for a student-athlete. Steer has even taught me things outside of being a student-athlete with simple things like credit and what is the best way to pay for school or pay off student loans.”
Aquari Fleming, 2020 Graduate of Palisade Preparatory High School, - “The best part of my experience with STEER was having a network of supportive people that wanted to see me succeed. Also being able to go in fun educational workshops with young adults that had some of the same dreams and aspirations as me.”
Dornell Mullings, 2019 Graduate of Palisade Preparatory High School, - “Steer never failed to make me feel included and welcomed. This program provided the building blocks needed, in order to shape my college experience in the way I desired.”
