Student Support Administrator
Montserrat Cardenas was one of the first student athletes to become part of the STEER organization. She grew up in Port Chester, New York and lived in a small apartment with her two brothers, parents and two adorable dogs. During high school she was involved in Track and Field and Swimming. In 2016 she graduated from Port Chester High School. Throughout her high school career STEER helped her become the student, athlete, and young adult she is today. She used STEER services such as SAT prep, an advisor and personal trainers to enhance her athletic and academic potential. In Montserrat's own words, "These are opportunities I couldn't have obtained on my own due to financial circumstances. STEER gave me a home, a family, freedom to express myself without the fear of being neglected due to my background, and the opportunity to meet amazing people."
She continued her education at Purchase College, which she graduated from in 2020 with a Bachelor's in Biochemistry. During her college years she continued to discover herself while facing life obstacles. She always kept STEER close to her heart which continued to guide her throughout her college years and to this day, something she always expresses her gratitude for. Currently, she is continuing her education as a graduate student at Cornell while given the opportunity to work alongside STEER in a role as Student Support Administrator. As a former STEER student athlete herself, it was always a goal of hers to give back, change, and shape the lives of young adults like herself through her experience.
