On Saturday, March 4th, we held a financial literacy workshop for our student athletes, which was run by our very own finance guru and CEO Mike Eck. 29 of our 35 students were in attendance and the energy was high the entire morning.
This course, titled “Becoming a Financial All-Star”, was designed to prepare our student athletes for dealing with their finances in college, and after college. The premise of the workshop was to teach the students how to make money, how to save money and how to build on it. We separated the students into small discussion groups and had a competition based on participation. First we discussed the starting salary for various fields in the work force. Then we talked about budgeting various salaries and separating expenses into MUSTS and WANTS. After that, we discussed different saving techniques for the left over money, while also giving a brief tutorial on the concept of a credit card. Lastly, we talked about investing money and letting it grow over time. This is a workshop we plan on having yearly for our student athletes so that they can learn to be financially independent. Thank you to Palisade Prep for the hospitality all morning. Below are some pictures of the Financial Literacy Workshop. Check out our Instagram post as well – don’t forget to give us a “follow”!
