We held our 2017 Spring Graduation Banquet at Mulino’s at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, NY on Wednesday, May 17. The event boasted over 200 attendees including staff, board members, founding donors, collaborative partners, friends of the organization, and all 46 Steer student athletes and their families. The evening was hosted by Executive Director of Programs Byron Womack, and Co-Founder Mike Eck. The evening was primarily dedicated to commemorating the graduates of the Steer program, which includes three student athletes, all of whom will be attending 4-year colleges or universities in the fall. Program Consultant Dr. Hector Morales-Negron spoke to the group regarding the mental conditioning work he does with our students and how his Peak Mental Game (PMG) program is implemented in order to ensure success for our students in all aspects of life. The event also featured James Kallusky, from Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA, a national foundation with a mission to change the lives of youth and strengthen communities through the power of sport (www.LaureusUSA.com). Steer for Student Athletes recently joined the NYC Sport for Development Collaborative, created by Laureus USA and Adelphi University. The collaborative is a group of over 60 local organizations using sport to positively impact the lives of youth in the New York City area. Following Dr. Morales, and James Kallusky of Laureus USA, the 2017 Humanitarian Award was presented to Lois Lavelle for her selfless efforts while volunteering her time as a Steer math tutor over the last year. We are truly blessed to have a community resource such as Lois Lavelle who is more than willing to do whatever is necessary for the betterment of our students. Student Support Coordinator, Jordan Eck, was then presented with the Steer For Student Athletes Award for his commitment to each steer student and their families over the last four years. And last, but certainly not least, we honored our three Steer program graduates from Port Chester High School Tamia Morgan, Karmen Pantoja and Xavier Tyson. We could not be more proud of them and excited for them as they embark on their new journey’s. Well done grads! Special “Thank You’s” for making this evening a success: Mulino’s Group, Pete Pezzella of Memorable Moments Photography, and DJ Dizz.
