On Monday, we had our inaugural Steer College Bus Tour.
A majority of our Student Athletes attended this trip and it was a huge success. The goal was to visit a few schools of different shapes and sizes to give our Student Athletes a taste of what college life looks like. This trip was our “Massachusetts Tour”. We started the trip at Port Chester Middle School and traveled up to UMASS Amherst where we got to see the athletic facilities. This included a tour of their football locker room, weight room and some 40-yard dashes on the football field. After seeing the UMASS athletic facilities, we visited downtown Amherst where we got to see Amherst College. Thanks to the generosity of Amherst College, our Student Athletes got to experience what it’s like eating in a college dining hall. A big thanks to Amherst Athletic Director, Don Faulstick, and Assistant Athletic Director, Bill McBride for paying our group a visit. We then toured the beautiful campus of Amherst College, checking out their Library and quad, before traveling to our final stop, American International College. At AIC, we paid a visit to Steer graduate Steven Hernandez. Steven is currently on scholarship playing soccer at AIC. It was an unbelievable experience for our Student Athletes to see one of our own having spread his wings. Steven gave us a quick tour of his dorm and some of the athletic facilities before we headed back to Port Chester. Can’t stress enough the significance of our Student Athletes seeing students that look like them on a college campus, especially someone who has been through the Steer program. We look forward to many more College Bus Tour’s in the future.
