STEER FOR STUDENT ATHLETES IS NAMED RECIPIENT FOR THE WESTCHESTER YOUTH BUREAU INVEST IN KIDS GRANT~$45,000 will be funded to Steer each year from 2018-2020~ Last week, Steer was named one of the recipients for the Westchester Youth Bureau Invest in Kids Grant. This grant rewards not for profit organizations in Westchester County funding from 2018 through 2020. With this money, Steer looks to continue towards its mission of changing the world one student athlete at a time.
In 1993, Invest in Kids was established under the Westchester County Youth Bureau Charter as a mechanism for provision of local tax levy financial resource for expanded use of the positive youth development model in addressing the needs of at-risk youth under the age of 21 in eleven urban communities. Since the inception of this initiative, small grants have also been made available to community programs serving at-risk, income eligible youth based upon United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant criteria. Steer looks forward to putting this money towards the 100 by 2020 campaign, a capital campaign launched in 2015 aimed at putting 100 student athletes through the program by 2020. Steer is well on its way of achieving this goal. A special note of appreciation goes to County Executive of Westchester Rob Astorino and Kevin Plunkett for their service and to the Westchester County Youth Bureau for their work in reviewing and selecting rewarded charities. “Our district is pleased and proud to partner with Steer for Student Athletes to bring high quality effective support programming to our students. Steer’s involvement has proven effective over the past few years and we are delighted that this funding will further our mission to ensure success of our students over the next three years,” said Joe Durney, Deputy Superintendent of Port Chester schools and Steer Co-Chairman. Some of the student athletes were incredibly excited when hearing the news. One Steer student athlete, Ceci Martinez, responded by saying, “Wow! That’s a game changer!” Steer is excited to put this money to work starting in 2018. What an incredible way to kick off the year as Steer continues it’s mission of changing the world one student athlete at a time.
